Frequently asked questions

This page answers the questions we expect business owners to ask, and explains the parts of our service that can be harder to follow. If it doesn’t answer your question, message us.

How it works

Each stand contains an NFC tag and has a QR code printed on it. Both hold a short web address on tapscend.co.uk that belongs to that one stand. When a customer taps the stand with their phone, or scans the QR code, the phone opens that address and our server immediately sends it on to the page you have chosen, such as your Google review page. Because this happens on our side, we can change where the stand leads at any time without reprinting the stand or rewriting the tag.

Try it on your phone

Scan this code with your phone’s camera. It goes through the same short link a stand uses, then shows how long your phone took to open the page.

Common questions

Getting started

What is a Tapscend stand?

A printed stand for your counter, or a card for your tables, designed for your venue. It contains an NFC tag and carries a QR code, and both open the page you choose on a customer’s phone.

Which page can it open?

Any web page. That includes review sites such as Google, Tripadvisor, Trustpilot and Facebook, social profiles such as Instagram and TikTok, booking apps such as Booksy, Fresha and Treatwell, and your own menu or website.

What does it cost?

There is a one-off setup fee for the design, the stand and installation, followed by a monthly plan. Message us for the cost for your venue.

Which businesses is it for?

Any local business where customers stand at a counter or sit at a table, including cafés, barbers, salons and shops. We work in Birmingham and install every stand in person.

Can I have more than one stand?

Yes. You can have counter stands, table cards or both. We agree the number with you before anything is made.

For your customers

Do customers need an app?

No. The page opens in the phone’s normal web browser.

Which phones does it work with?

Most iPhones and Android phones from recent years can read an NFC tag. Customers whose phone has no NFC, or has it switched off, can scan the QR code with the camera instead.

Does it open the review form straight away?

Yes. A Tapscend review stand opens Google’s review form for your business, with the stars ready to choose, rather than your Google listing with the review button further down.

Do customers need a Google account to leave a review?

Yes. Google only accepts reviews from people signed in to a Google account. Most Android phones are already signed in, and anyone who isn’t is asked to sign in before they write their review.

Where do customers tap?

Most phones read NFC tags near the top of the back of the phone, close to the camera. Customers hold that part of the phone against the stand.

Does the stand need power or wifi?

No. The NFC tag has no battery and needs no power or wifi. The customer’s phone uses its own internet connection.

What do you record when someone taps?

Which stand was tapped, when, and whether it was a tap or a QR scan. Some stands also send their own tap number, so a real tap can be told apart from the same link opened again later. We record nothing that identifies the person, such as their name, phone number, IP address, device or location.

Privacy notice

After setup

Can the link be changed?

Yes. Message us and we change it on our side. The stand does not need reprinting and the tag does not need rewriting.

What does the monthly plan include?

Link hosting, link changes on request, a monthly report that we review with you, redesigns throughout the year, and ongoing technical support.

What if the stand stops working?

Message us and we will look into it as soon as possible.

Will it increase my reviews?

We cannot promise any number of reviews, because leaving one is always the customer’s choice. The stand makes leaving a review quicker, and we place it where customers will see it.

Can I offer customers a reward for a review?

No. Google’s policy does not allow rewards for reviews, or asking only satisfied customers. Every customer who taps is sent to the same page, and we will not set up anything that breaks these rules.

What happens if I cancel?

You keep the stand, and your link keeps working for 3 days after your plan ends. Before then, we send you a guide and your tag’s password so you can point the stand at your own review page free of charge. After the 3 days the QR code opens the Tapscend website, so we recommend covering it.

Do you offer loyalty cards?

Not yet. Loyalty cards are a planned product and are not available yet.
