Where is the NFC reader on a phone?
A phone reads an NFC tag from a short distance, usually a centimetre or two, and only at the spot where its NFC reader sits.
iPhone
The reader is at the top of the phone, near the camera, so hold the top edge of the iPhone against the stand. From the iPhone XS onwards, tags are read without opening anything, as long as the phone is past its lock screen. The iPhone 7, 8 and X need the NFC Tag Reader button in Control Centre.
Android
On most Android phones the reader is in the middle of the back, though on some it is near the camera at the top. NFC needs to be switched on. It is usually in Settings, under Connected devices or Connections. The phone also needs to be past its lock screen.
If it still won’t read
- Move the phone slowly over the stand, as the reader’s position varies between models.
- Take off a thick or metal case, or one that holds cards, as these can block the signal.
- Scan the QR code with the camera instead.
